Emerging Tech Talk #019 – Jott VoiceMail

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Do you dislike voicemail? What if you could get all of your voicemail messages transcribed into text that could show up in your email? Or via a SMS message to your phone?

In this episode, Dan York demonstrates Jott’s new “Jott VoiceMail” feature (see also this blog post) that can be set up with your mobile phone so that all your calls go to Jott VoiceMail, are transcribed into text and then sent to you via email and/or SMS. The service is available for a free trial at http://www.jott.com/ While there are certainly other services out there that offer this service, the great thing about Jott’s implementation is that it is integrated with all the other voice-driven Jott services such as the ability to leave messages that become Google Calendar entries, reminders, blog posts or Twitter updates.

Emerging Tech Talk #018 – Open Source and Microblogging

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Why are identi.ca and laconica important? What are they anyway? What about Google’s making Jaiku open source?

In this episode, host Dan York talks about recent news of Identi.ca’s funding (see also here) and Google’s move to make Jaiku open source (see also here): what they mean in the social media picture and why open source platforms for microblogging may be useful (if for no other reason than to have a Plan B for any problems with Twitter).

Note: Developers may find my OSCON slides about adding voice to Identi.ca of interest. I also discussed Laconi.ca’s value in my review of corporate internal microblogging options.

If you use identi.ca, you can also subscribe to our updates at identi.ca/voxeo.

Emerging Tech Talk #017 – Martin Murray on Using Twitter, YouTube and other Social Media During A Natural Disaster

Monday, January 19th, 2009

How can Twitter, YouTube and other social media be used during the recovery from a natural disaster?

In this episode, host Dan York spoke with Martin Murray, principal spokesperson for Public Service of New Hampshire (PSNH), about how he used Twitter, YouTube and other social media during the severe ice storm in December 2008 that caused over 60% of the state to lose power. Martin also spoke a bit about issues related to restoring power with regard to the physical infrastructure. He can be found on Twitter at http://twitter.com/psnh or at http://www.psnhnews.com/

As is probably obvious from the various blogs I write at, I continue to be fascinated by the ways that social media technologies and micro-blogging in particular are changing some of the ways in which we communicate. Perhaps it is the ubiquitous access through mobile devices… perhaps it is the “one-to-many” aspects of the conversations within something like Twitter. Whatever the reason, the fact remains that we are seeing a new communication method emerge out of all these status updates across all the various services. Whether that is good or bad, or whether it is useful or not, are all perhaps larger questions for another time. In the meantime, I hope you found this interview with Martin Murray interesting.

P.S. If you are interested in the topic, you may also be interested in the 30-minute audio interview I did with Martin for the For Immediate Release (FIR) podcast. Given that FIR is focused on the public relations side of “communications”, Martin and I went deeper into the PR/communications side of using social media as well as the challenges of doing that within the context of a larger company.

Emerging Tech Talk #016 – The Three Pools of Tools for Voice Application Developers

Friday, January 16th, 2009

What are the different types of tools out there for developers of voice/communications applications? What choices do developers have? And where does Voxeo’s recent acquisition of VoiceObjects fit within the range of tools?

In this episode, host Dan York talks about the “three pools of tools” for developers of voice applications and the options that developers have available when considering how to build a voice application.

Now there are certainly other ways to slice up and categorize the tools out there for developers, and if you have your own or disagree with my categorizations, please do feel free to leave a comment here.

“Emerging Tech Talk” public Skype chat now available – feel free to join…

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Would you like to join a public chat room to provide feedback on Emerging Tech Talk shows? Or to suggest new topics? Or to just chat about topics I cover in the show?

Since I’m a heavy Skype user on a daily basis, I decided to start up a public chat for this show. If you also use Skype, you can join the ETT public chat simply by clicking this link.

You will also see this box in the second sidebar now where you can join:

I’m not sure, quite frankly, what type of traffic we’ll see in the public chat, but I thought it could be a useful experiment…. and I’m open to your suggestions as to how we might use it.

Emerging Tech Talk #014 – Is VoIP dead? It depends…

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Is “VoIP” dead? As we start 2009, this theme of VoIP being “dead” is percolating throughout the VoIP/communications part of the blogosphere. Alec Saunders says it is (and said so again). Om Malik concurred with Alec. So does PhoneBoy. Jon Arnold says “it’s not dead yet“. Andy Abramson agrees with Jon. Ken Camp says VoIP is just boring. Jeff Pulver says VoIP is very much alive (and later amplifies that statement). And a zillion others have joined in as well…

In this episode, host Dan York looks at the truth – and fallacy – of the statements being made and provides his view that in many ways the whole theme is rather silly until…… (sorry, you have to watch! ;-) )
