Emerging Tech Talk #38 – Ted Gilchrist about location-based mashups and Brightkite

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Host Dan York spoke with independent developer Ted Gilchrist about the VnoTed service he created that lets you call in and post location updates to Brightkite, and also have those updates go out to Twitter and Friendfeed.

[UPDATE: Shortly after I uploaded the show, Ted contacted me to let me know that unfortunately VnoTed is not working right now due to the Brightkite API being broken. He has apparently been waiting for Brightkite to fix their API, but has not yet seen any movement. Not to be deterred, Ted is already exploring ways that he might rewrite the VnoTed service to use another location-based service that has a stable API. Stay tuned...]

Beyond the actual function of location-based voice notes, Ted’s service is quite an interesting mashup of services. As he describes in a document, VnoTed uses:

  • Brightkite
  • Google App Engine for web hosting
  • Amazon S3 for storage of voice notes
  • Voxeo’s Tropo.com for the voice interaction
  • Voxeo’s IMified for setting hashtags
  • Google Maps to get the latitude and longitude of a US ZIP code

Ted has also made his VnoTed code open source and posted it to Github. Those interested can download the code and experiment with it directly. More info about Ted and his work can be found on www.vnoted.com or on Twitter at @egilchri.

For those wondering about the background, this video was recorded in the Voxeo booth at SpeechTEK in August 2009 in New York City.

Emerging Tech Talk #019 – Jott VoiceMail

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Do you dislike voicemail? What if you could get all of your voicemail messages transcribed into text that could show up in your email? Or via a SMS message to your phone?

In this episode, Dan York demonstrates Jott’s new “Jott VoiceMail” feature (see also this blog post) that can be set up with your mobile phone so that all your calls go to Jott VoiceMail, are transcribed into text and then sent to you via email and/or SMS. The service is available for a free trial at http://www.jott.com/ While there are certainly other services out there that offer this service, the great thing about Jott’s implementation is that it is integrated with all the other voice-driven Jott services such as the ability to leave messages that become Google Calendar entries, reminders, blog posts or Twitter updates.

In this episode, host Dan York talks about the “three pools of tools” for developers of voice applications and the options that developers have available when considering how to build a voice application.
