Emerging Tech Talk #40 – How to Use Google Wave for Collaborative Conference Notes and Conversation

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

NOTE: In the hour since this screencast was posted, I’ve noticed that the “easypublic@appspot.com” wave bot is now not quickly making waves public to which it is added. Having no connection whatsoever to that Wave bot, I don’t know if there is a capacity issue that is impacting it right now.

How can you use Google Wave as a powerful tool for collaborative note taking and conversation at a conference? In this screencast, host Dan York shows how Wave was used at eComm Europe and how you can set up public waves so that you can do this kind of collaborative work at a conference or event.

You can download or play the podcast here (in Quicktime):

Alternatively, you can watch on YouTube at:

The process Dan outlines is this:

  1. Create a new wave, title it, add some initial content, etc.
  2. Add “easypublic@appspot.com” as a participant to the wave.
  3. Tag the wave with the conference/event ID

The wave is now public and can be found by a search in Wave on “tag:tagname with:public”.

To add the new wave to a list in another wave, do this:

  1. Open the wave with the list.
  2. Click on the blip in the wave where you want to add the link to the new wave, and then open that blip for editing (Ctrl+E is one way).
  3. In the main column of Wave, click on the right edge of the new wave and drag/drop that into the blip you are editing.
  4. You now will have a link to your new wave. Save and close the blip you are editing.

If you want to connect with Dan York on Wave, you can find him at “danyorkLPG@googlewave.com”.

Special mention should be made of eComm Europe attendee Johanna Kollman who built off of what the Google Wave team started and really showed how this collaboration could be done through all the eComm waves she set up. Thanks, Johanna!

P.S. For those interested, the audio for this episode was recorded using the Blue Eyeball webcam I discussed in the last ETT episode.

Emerging Tech Talk #38 – Ted Gilchrist about location-based mashups and Brightkite

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Host Dan York spoke with independent developer Ted Gilchrist about the VnoTed service he created that lets you call in and post location updates to Brightkite, and also have those updates go out to Twitter and Friendfeed.

[UPDATE: Shortly after I uploaded the show, Ted contacted me to let me know that unfortunately VnoTed is not working right now due to the Brightkite API being broken. He has apparently been waiting for Brightkite to fix their API, but has not yet seen any movement. Not to be deterred, Ted is already exploring ways that he might rewrite the VnoTed service to use another location-based service that has a stable API. Stay tuned...]

Beyond the actual function of location-based voice notes, Ted’s service is quite an interesting mashup of services. As he describes in a document, VnoTed uses:

  • Brightkite
  • Google App Engine for web hosting
  • Amazon S3 for storage of voice notes
  • Voxeo’s Tropo.com for the voice interaction
  • Voxeo’s IMified for setting hashtags
  • Google Maps to get the latitude and longitude of a US ZIP code

Ted has also made his VnoTed code open source and posted it to Github. Those interested can download the code and experiment with it directly. More info about Ted and his work can be found on www.vnoted.com or on Twitter at @egilchri.

For those wondering about the background, this video was recorded in the Voxeo booth at SpeechTEK in August 2009 in New York City.

Emerging Tech Talk #36 – Christopher Penn about Google Wave

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

What is most interesting about Google Wave? Back in June 2009 at an event happening near the Enterprise 2.0 conference in Boston, MA, I had a chance to sit down with Christopher S. Penn and get his thoughts about the recently-announced Google Wave and how it might be used as a communication tool. As I listened to this recording today, I was struck by how much of it was echoed in a recent blog post I put up about the need for distributed and decentralized systems – we do need that distributed/decentralized approach. I know that while the Wave protocol is published, federation is not yet possible with Wave. Let’s hope it comes soon.

While I know that Chris’ views on Wave may have changed in the 3 months since we recorded this session, I thought the points he makes are great. More info about Chris can be found at:

Thanks, Chris, for agreeing to do the interview – and should we have the opportunity to do another one, I’ll try to get it up online sooner! My apologies for the delay.

Emerging Tech Talk #32 – Voxeo Acquires IMified

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

What if you could develop self-service apps that interacted with users via IM? In this episode, with the news (see news release) that Voxeo is acquiring IMified host Dan York speaks with IMified.com co-founder Adam Kalsey about the service, what developers can do with it, how they can get involved and how the service works.

Emerging Tech Talk #27 – The Park Bench Manifesto – Why We Want To Kill Off The PSTN

Friday, March 6th, 2009

What is the “rich communication experience” that we are trying to build? Why can’t that experience work over today’s Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)? What do we need to make this experience happen?

In this 10-minute presentation at the Emerging Communication Conference (eComm), I sought to answer the question of why we want to move beyond the PSTN – outlining the kind of experience we are seeking, the pieces of the communications puzzle that are currently available, the issues we need to address and the roadblocks that are in place. I end asking people to think about what is the experience we want to build – and to bring more people into that conversation to make it happen.

This talk began forming last summer when eComm organizer Lee Dryburgh made a comment on the internal eComm Program Advisory Board mailing list about how he was tired of people always taking shots at how poor the PSTN was without offering a few of what we were aiming to achieve. At about the same time, fellow blogger Aswath Rao asked why “VoIPers wanted to kill off the PSTN.” I decided to put together an answer – and the result was this presentation.

A text version of the talk will be available on my DisruptiveTelephony.com blog in the next few days and the slides are available on SlideShare and also embedded below.

And yes, all 54 slides were delivered in 10 minutes. (It’s a certain style of presenting.)

Comments and feedback on this presentation are definitely appreciated.

Emerging Tech Talk #26 – Intro to Tropo.com – eComm 209

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Would you like to develop voice applications in programming languages you already know? In this episode, Voxeo CEO Jonathan Taylor speaks from the stage of the Emerging Communication Conference (eComm) 2009 in San Francisco, CA, as he announces the launch of Tropo.com – a new way to create voice applications in programming languages like python, ruby, groovy, JavaScript and PHP.

You can learn how to start developing voice applications at www.tropo.com or read more at blogs.voxeo.com/tropo.

NOTES:

  1. The slides that go along with this presentation are embedded below the video.

  2. This presentation was also recorded by the eComm conference and will be made available on the eComm blog over the next months. We’ll updated this blog post when that version is available.

Emerging Tech Talk #25 – Learning Git, Part 2 – Getting Started with Git

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Building on the intro to version control systems in Emerging Tech Talk #24, in this episode Dan York describes how the Git distributed version control system is different from non-distributed version control systems such as CVS and SVN and then goes on to provide a very basic demonstration of using Git.

There’s obviously far more to using git than can be demonstrated in a short video here, so if you are interested in learning more there are many tutorials and other info available on the Git documentation page.

You can download or play the podcast here (in Quicktime):

Note that viewing in Quicktime will give you the highest quality (and may allow you to actually read the demo).

Alternatively, you can watch on YouTube at:

PRODUCTION NOTES: Question for viewers:

  • Is the screencast of the terminal shell readable when you viewed the video?

After watching this, I think I needed to zoom in more so that the text was larger. I’m not sure how this would actually look in an iPhone, for instance. (I will look soon.) Something to remember for next time. Anyway, any feedback on how good or poor the viewing was would be appreciated.

And yes, I know the transition from me speaking to the screencast was a bit harsh… still working through some nuances of my tool chain.
