Emerging Tech Talk #40 – How to Use Google Wave for Collaborative Conference Notes and Conversation

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

NOTE: In the hour since this screencast was posted, I’ve noticed that the “easypublic@appspot.com” wave bot is now not quickly making waves public to which it is added. Having no connection whatsoever to that Wave bot, I don’t know if there is a capacity issue that is impacting it right now.

How can you use Google Wave as a powerful tool for collaborative note taking and conversation at a conference? In this screencast, host Dan York shows how Wave was used at eComm Europe and how you can set up public waves so that you can do this kind of collaborative work at a conference or event.

You can download or play the podcast here (in Quicktime):

Alternatively, you can watch on YouTube at:

The process Dan outlines is this:

  1. Create a new wave, title it, add some initial content, etc.
  2. Add “easypublic@appspot.com” as a participant to the wave.
  3. Tag the wave with the conference/event ID

The wave is now public and can be found by a search in Wave on “tag:tagname with:public”.

To add the new wave to a list in another wave, do this:

  1. Open the wave with the list.
  2. Click on the blip in the wave where you want to add the link to the new wave, and then open that blip for editing (Ctrl+E is one way).
  3. In the main column of Wave, click on the right edge of the new wave and drag/drop that into the blip you are editing.
  4. You now will have a link to your new wave. Save and close the blip you are editing.

If you want to connect with Dan York on Wave, you can find him at “danyorkLPG@googlewave.com”.

Special mention should be made of eComm Europe attendee Johanna Kollman who built off of what the Google Wave team started and really showed how this collaboration could be done through all the eComm waves she set up. Thanks, Johanna!

P.S. For those interested, the audio for this episode was recorded using the Blue Eyeball webcam I discussed in the last ETT episode.

Emerging Tech Talk #38 – Ted Gilchrist about location-based mashups and Brightkite

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Host Dan York spoke with independent developer Ted Gilchrist about the VnoTed service he created that lets you call in and post location updates to Brightkite, and also have those updates go out to Twitter and Friendfeed.

[UPDATE: Shortly after I uploaded the show, Ted contacted me to let me know that unfortunately VnoTed is not working right now due to the Brightkite API being broken. He has apparently been waiting for Brightkite to fix their API, but has not yet seen any movement. Not to be deterred, Ted is already exploring ways that he might rewrite the VnoTed service to use another location-based service that has a stable API. Stay tuned...]

Beyond the actual function of location-based voice notes, Ted’s service is quite an interesting mashup of services. As he describes in a document, VnoTed uses:

  • Brightkite
  • Google App Engine for web hosting
  • Amazon S3 for storage of voice notes
  • Voxeo’s Tropo.com for the voice interaction
  • Voxeo’s IMified for setting hashtags
  • Google Maps to get the latitude and longitude of a US ZIP code

Ted has also made his VnoTed code open source and posted it to Github. Those interested can download the code and experiment with it directly. More info about Ted and his work can be found on www.vnoted.com or on Twitter at @egilchri.

For those wondering about the background, this video was recorded in the Voxeo booth at SpeechTEK in August 2009 in New York City.

Emerging Tech Talk #35 – Robert Sparks about SIPit and SIP interoperability

Monday, September 28th, 2009

sipit.jpgWhat is the SIPit test event all about? How does it make communications systems better? What do participants do at the event? How can companies get involved? To answer all those questions and more, host Dan York interviewed SIPit coordinator Robert Sparks at the SIPit 25 event held in September 2009 at the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Lab (IOL) in Durham, NH, USA.

More information about SIPit can be found at http://www.sipit.net/
Many thanks to Robert for agreeing to the interview after a long day of testing. Robert has also posted a summary of the SIPit25 event at:

Note – new video uploaded for ETT #34 that will work with the iPhone

Friday, September 18th, 2009

After receiving several reports that Emerging Tech Talk #34 would not display on an iPhone, I did some digging and discovered that the issue was that I exported the video out of iMovie ‘09 as the “Large” size of 720×540. Why I did that, I can’t tell you… the Share->Movie screen is very clear that the Large size will not work on iPhones or iPods:

iMovieexport.jpg

I exported the movie again in the “Medium” size of 640×480, which is what I’ve normally done, and then uploaded it to the server again. This seems to have fixed the issue. I tested on my iPhone and I could download and view this movie.

I don’t know if there will be any caching issues you all may see with iTunes or whatever your podcatcher is, but the new video is up there and is at the identical URL to the previous file.

And yes, astute observers will note that in theory the Medium version shouldn’t work on the iPhone – according to iMovie ‘09 – but it always has before. Methinks Apple needs to update that screen.

Emerging Tech Talk #016 – The Three Pools of Tools for Voice Application Developers

Friday, January 16th, 2009

What are the different types of tools out there for developers of voice/communications applications? What choices do developers have? And where does Voxeo’s recent acquisition of VoiceObjects fit within the range of tools?

In this episode, host Dan York talks about the “three pools of tools” for developers of voice applications and the options that developers have available when considering how to build a voice application.

You can download or play the podcast here:

Or you can watch on YouTube at:

Now there are certainly other ways to slice up and categorize the tools out there for developers, and if you have your own or disagree with my categorizations, please do feel free to leave a comment here.

Emerging Tech Talk #001 – Introduction to the Show

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Welcome to “Emerging Tech Talk” a new video podcast that I’m launching here on the Voxeo blog site. In this introductory episode, I am simply explaining a bit about what I intend to do with this show.

You can download or watch the show here:

icon for podpress  Emerging Tech Talk #001 - Introduction to the Show [3:32m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

Or watch via YouTube:

As I mention, I’m not entirely sure how often I’ll be uploading these episodes. I know that this particular week I’ll have a couple of episodes up online. I anticipate that some of the episodes will be me speaking, as in this one (although hopefully not that often from airports), some of the episodes will be interviews, like the one I’m putting up tomorrow, and some of the episodes will be screencasts.

I also need to work out some of the details of publishing a video podcast through the WordPress MU platform we are using, so this podcast is also a way for me to try out some of the technology.

I’ve got some interesting topics already lined up and it should all be fun over the next while. If there are topics you would like to hear me talk about, please do send me an email. And please do subscribe to the RSS feed to keep up with our latest episodes.

Thanks for watching… and I look forward to sharing the journey into emerging technology with you.
