1:00pm-1:30pm: Lessons Learned in Large-Scale SIP Interoperability.
Presented by Dan York, Voxeo and VOIPSA (Voice over IP Security Alliance).

As one of the largest platforms for hosted communications applications, Voxeo is constantly working with operators to add additional inbound and outbound SIP connectivity. To maintain redundant connections into the company’s 7 global data centers Voxeo has connections into many of the largest SIP service providers in North America and Europe. Because demand frequently outstrips the capacity of what some operators can provide, Voxeo is constantly looking at new options and new providers. Along the way, the company has learned a great amount about interoperability and the fact that “SIP is not SIP”, i.e. almost every operator’s version of SIP winds up being slightly different than others.

A number of topics will be discussed in this session, including what are the typical issues faced by an application platform when interconnecting with a large number of SIP service providers? What causes the most friction with bringing on a new service provider? How could interoperability be improved? What strategies can be used to interoperate with multiple SIP service providers? In addressing these questions, the session will report on the lessons learned from the struggles Voxeo has experienced, and will suggest some ideas for operators and for the wider industry.
