Registration now open for IETF 74 in San Francisco in March 2009

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

ietflogo-2.jpgThe Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Secretariat just announced that registration is now open for the 74th meeting of the IETF to be held March 22-27, 2009, in San Francisco. You can follow the link there for “Online Registration” and go through the process. Note that you do not have to pay right now as you register, but you will obviously need to do so before attending (and if you do before March 13th you will get the “early bird” pricing).

Being in San Francisco with close proximity to many companies involved in high tech (and also with many flights into the region), I would expect this event to be well-attended, although we’ll see given current economic issues. If you’ve never gone to an IETF meeting but are interested in the standards space, you may want to consider going to this one. (You may, though, want to browse through the Tao of IETF first, and if you do decide to go for the first time, it’s worth planning to attend the “newcomer’s training” on Sunday afternoon before the week starts.)

New video podcast up explaining Peer-to-peer SIP (P2PSIP)…

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Want to learn more about Peer-to-peer SIP (P2PSIP)? If so, I’ve now put up a video podcast episode where I’m interviewing David Bryan, chair of the IETF working group on P2PSIP. As long-time readers are probably aware, I’ve written about P2PSIP here a number of times – and also explained my particular interest. I continue to find P2PSIP a fascinating area of research… and so you can probably expect to continue to see more articles on it in the future. :-)

Meanwhile, enjoy the video – and if you have visited my Emerging Tech Talk video podcast, you’ll find other videos there dealing with emerging technology issues:

Another weblog about IETF standards… from Hannes Tschofenig

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

HannesTschofenigWeblog.jpgIf you subscribe to this “Speaking of Standards” blog or are just interested in IETF standards in general, another weblog you might want to follow is my good friend Hannes Tschofenig’s weblog. Hannes works at Nokia Siemens and has been very involved in IETF standards in the SIP-related space for quite a few years. Lately he’s been doing a large amount of work with emergency services and geographic location issues. Anyway, he had some domain-name issues that moved his blog around a bit some time ago, but now he’s here at this address and posting several times a month. It’s good to see another weblog out there writing about standards – and just by reading his weblog today I’ve been clued in to a couple of things that are good to know about.

Voxeo’s VoiceObjects acquisition further promotes the open standard of VoiceXML

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

VoiceObjectslogo-1.jpgAs a strong supporter of open standards, I think one of the aspects of our acquisition of VoiceObjects that was only touched on briefly in the video podcast I did is what this means for the world of standards. Specifically VoiceXML. What intrigues me about VoiceObjects’ platform is not just it’s support for standard VoiceXML, but even more its support for cross-platform VoiceXML. Quoting from our news release:

VoiceObjects uniquely enables the development of phone applications that can be deployed on a wide variety of VoiceXML platforms. This capability is in stark contrast to vendor-specific development solutions offered by Voxeo’s competitors. These single-vendor solutions restrict application deployment to a vendor’s own VoiceXML platform, denying the freedom of vendor independence and application portability the VoiceXML standard was designed to support. Voxeo will continue to openly and actively support VoiceObjects’ application deployment on multiple VoiceXML platforms including Aspect, Avaya, Genesys, Intervoice and Nortel. VoiceObjects will also be available in extremely cost-effective on-demand and on-premise offerings bundled with Voxeo’s own Prophecy VoiceXML Platform.

While VoiceXML is itself an open standard, the way VoiceXML is implemented on some platforms (or “extended“) can certainly wind up restricting deployment to that one platform. We firmly believe customers should be able to develop completely standard VoiceXML apps that can avoid proprietary vendor lock-in and can be moved to other platforms if necessary. I’m delighted to see VoiceObjects added to our portfolio of tools so that even more developers can create voice applications and can be independent and portable. Obviously, we think we have an extremely compelling case for people to deploy their voice applications on our platform, but we want people to do so because it is their choice to do so, not because they are forced to do so.

I’m looking forward to writing more here in the weeks and months ahead about VoiceObjects and the standards it supports.

IETF 74 now has a Facebook Event page…

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

ietflogo-2.jpgWith IETF 73 just ending last month in Minneapolis, the next IETF meeting (IETF 74) will take place March 23-27 in glorious San Francisco. While the IETF.org page isn’t up yet with hotel and other info, someone did create a Facebook event related to IETF74. So if you are planning to go, or are thinking about it, and are also a Facebook user, you can add yourself to the event. I am currently planning to be out there, so if you are as well I’ll look forward to seeing you there.

P.S. And yes, there is a bit of irony to the open-standards-based IETF having an event posting in the closed walled garden of Facebook… but hey, the reality is that many of us DO use Facebook.
