Slides from Voxeo CTO RJ Auburn’s talk at VoiceCon about mashups and Tropo.com

This morning at VoiceCon Orlando, Voxeo CTO RJ Auburn was part of a panel on “voice mashups”. RJ spoke about the tools available for developers and specifically focused on what you can do with Tropo.com. RJ’s slides are now available at SlideShare and I will embed them here for your viewing:

Great Tropo mashup – call in and query the IMDB Top 250 movies list

We love seeing what people create with Tropo.com and this week we saw a fun app created by Gert Goet that lets you call in and speak the name of a movie. If that film is in the Top 250 list at the Internet Movie Database (IMDB) you’ll get the IMDB ratings for the film, it’s position in the IMDB Top 250 and other information about the film. You can try it yourself using either a Skype or SIP connection:

When I asked him about posting about his app on this blog, Gert Goet send along this (unsolicited) comment which he subsequently said I could also use:

The easy to use API made the app really fun to develop actually, even for someone with no prior experience in VOIP-development.

That’s exactly the kind of feedback we hoped we’d hear!

Kudos to Gert for creating this app and we look forward to seeing whatever else you all may create with Tropo!

Tweeter Phone uses Tropo to read you your latest tweets

Here’s exactly the kind of rapid innovation we were hoping to see with Tropo. Last night, a developer attends the monthly meeting of the Orlando Ruby Users Group which we hosted and where we demonstrated Tropo. He goes home, spends a few hours working on a site and… ta da…

Tweeter Phone!

You login with your Twitter credentials (yes, you have to provide your Twitter username/password at least until Twitter finishes their OAuth implementation), enter in your phone number and then whenever you call the application phone number from you phone you will hear the latest Twitter updates from the people you follow. Works great!

Now, okay… sure, for those of us with smart phones with Twitter apps or mobile web clients it’s probably easier to check Twitter updates from those interfaces… but if you don’t have such a phone or you don’t have a great data connection, this provides another way to hear what people are posting.

More importantly, in our mind, was the fact that this developer could go from knowing nothing about Tropo to launching a new communication service in a few hours. We love his About page:

Tweeter Phone was built by Devoh.

The initial version was spent in a single 5-hour, late-night coding session.

The phone service is powered by Tropo, the new cloud-based telephony service from Voxeo.

Kudos to “Devoh” for bringing out this service – and we look forward to seeing what else he (and you all) do with Tropo.

Jason Goecke: Writing a Ruby app for Tropo

Over on his blog, Jason Goecke recently published a great post: “Writing a Ruby app for Tropo” that provides an example of writing a Tropo app in Ruby. As Jason writes:

This example uses the Yahoo Query Language (YQL) to fetch the weather based on a US zip code you may either speak or touch tone in via your telephone key pad. The first step is to answer the phone and then welcome the user. The script then builds a Ruby hash, named ‘options’, that provides the instructions for building the menu and event handlers for Tropo.

Jason goes on in his post to provide source code and walk you through how to get the app set up on Tropo.com.

Over 140 sample Tropo applications and growing strong…

Just over a week from the launch of Tropo.com and already our collection of sample applications has grown to over 140 across all five languages! (Groovy, JavaScript, PHP, python and Ruby)

As I mentioned previously (complete with more instructions), all of the sample applications are available for download from our Github account at:

Join the Tropo developer community – via Forums, IRC or Skype

As we roll out Tropo for developing voice applications, we’re also looking at ways to connect developers and help them learn about how to better develop applications on the Tropo platform. To that end, we’re offering several options:

Forums

For those familiar with our Evolution developer portal, you’ll know that we offer a large number of web-based forums where developers can post questions and receive answers from Voxeo staff and other developers. We’re offering the same kind of forums for Tropo at: 

http://www.tropo.com/forums/

We encourage you all to post your questions there in the various forums.

IRC

For more real-time assistance, we’ve set up a channel, #tropo on irc.freenode.net that you can access via any IRC client. We have also provided a web-based IRC interface that provides easy access to the chat.

Skype Public Chat

Being avid Skype users, we’re also experimenting with a Skype Public Chat related to Tropo. You are welcome to join the public chat (although users of the new Skype 4.0 for Windows are unable to join through links and will need to skype me and have me add you).

In all cases, we’ll have Voxeo folks in the various channels looking forward to helping you learn all about Tropo and how to build voice apps based on the platform.

Calling all web developers. Check out our cloud… earn some cash.

With Tropo, Voxeo makes it very easy for web developers to build voice and telephony applications using familiar languages – JavaScript, Groovy, PHP, Ruby and Python for starters. During the Tropo launch today at eComm, Voxeo announced that it would pay $100 cash for each selected sample app.   Here’s how it works:

  • Developers can join Tropo for free at www.tropo.com. When you sign up, you’ll receive a $200 usage credit for running applications in the future. For now, Tropo is in a free trial period.
  • Check out our documentation and samples by clicking the “documentation” tab or go directly to http://docs.tropo.com.
  • At our sole discretion we will pay $100 for any sample applications we like. All you need to do is write an app, submit it to us at www.tropo.com,and agree to publish it under the MIT license. If we like it we’ll PayPal you $100.
