Web-savvy teens prefer the old landline phone
December 20th, 2007 by RJ AuburnWhen it comes to communication with teens it still seems that the old school phone is still king of the media channels based on this USA Today article. While I would have expected that cell phones would have taken the crown by now it seems the old wired lines still have some life in them for at least a bit longer (or until mom and dad fork over the cash for the kids to get a cell phone). Interestingly teens least favorite method of communication was e-mail.

For a slightly older population (college age), I can corroborate students’ dislike of e-mail. It seems to be associated with “adults” and is viewed as an overly “formal” media. Guess that has more to do with how us “old folk” developed the norms of that media.
The preference for landlines I find surprising. That’s certainly not been our experience on campus. Of course, in most cases, this is a “shared” media in students’ rooms. Perhaps that’s the real issue.
I also wonder about the poll itself. I notice is was based on a telephone survey. Could the polling mechanism have skewed the result?
