Video: Dan York at ITEXPO talking about cloud, security and what’s next

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

At ITEXPO back in January, Eric Linask at TMC interviewed me in what has seemed to become a regular every-six-months routine. In the interview, I discussed:

  • the Cloud Communications Summit and pushing communications out into “the cloud”
  • security issues related to cloud communications
  • what’s next in communications, including multi-channel communications (a part of which we refer to as Unified Self-Service)

The big black vehicle behind me was being raffled off as part of the event promotion… hence why we were there. (Wouldn’t it perhaps have been more interesting if we did the interview inside the vehicle?) Anyway… here’s the video: (and will astute observers notice anything about me that is different from the other videos I’ve done?)

What’s with all these “Voxeo Speaks” videos? The story…

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

If you are wondering what is going on with all these “Voxeo Speaks” videos appearing in our Voxeo Talks blog, here’s the deal – last week at ITEXPO I (Dan York) recorded several of the sessions in Thomas Howe’s Cloud Communications Summit with the intent of making them available through our voxeo.blip.tv channel. I have to use blip.tv because the videos are longer than the 10 minutes allowed by YouTube. But then, of course, I realized that to publish them to that channel in the way that I am currently using the channel, I needed to number them… and perhaps it’s just me, but I wanted them to be in rough chronological order with the other conference videos I have recorded.

So… I am basically “flushing the queue”, as it were, and getting some of the video I’ve had around for a few months up online. I’m almost there, but if you have worked with video you know that it takes a while to render. Over the next few days I should be all caught up.

I hope you enjoy the presentations – and yes, the lighting was horrible on that WPMU presentation… (well, actually the brightness of the slides caused the camera to reduce the exposure level).

P.S. And no, I don’t know why precisely I didn’t spin up a separate “blog” on the site specifically to house these videos. I still could… but now these are here in the Voxeo Talks stream. My thinking really was that people can subscribe directly to the blip.tv channel – and that we won’t have a zillion of these videos over the course of a year. I may revisit that thinking, though.

Voxeo Speaks #007 – The Apps Race – Dan York and Thomas Howe

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

At VON 2009 in Miami Beach, FL, Voxeo’s Dan York joined Thomas Howe and Suresh Bhandarkar to discuss the topic of applications and “app stores”. The abstract of the session was: The Apple App Store has proven the value of embracing third-party application developers to bring innovative, sticky and useful applications to subscribers. But how can service providers leverage the idea? To date device manufacturers like Research in Motion Ltd. and Palm Inc., or platform providers like Google Inc. and Broadsoft Corp. have led the applications charge-and reaped the benefits. This session will examine where carriers fit into the value chain ? and how they can build viable ecosystems of their own. … although Dan and Thomas took it in different directions in a lively and spirited discussion. More info about Voxeo can be found at www.voxeo.com and blogs.voxeo.com.

Voxeo Speaks #006 – Beyond Boxes: The Future of the PBX

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Beyond Boxes: The Future of the PBX – On September 21, 2009, at the VON 2009 conference in Miami Beach, FL, Voxeo’s Dan York, Director of Conversations joined a panel discussion about the future of the PBX. Though the PBX has been the heart of enterprise telephony and arguably the heart of the business itself, hosted and cloud-based telephony are finally convincing customers to loosen their death grip on gear in the on-premises closet. This session will explain the advantages, such as ever-current applications, support for distributed workforces and (ironically) unprecedented user-level control. And, oh yeah, its opex-based model is pretty great for cash-strapped companies, too. Moderator: Mike Oeth, CEO, Junction Networks Other Panelist: Chris Thompson, Senior Product Manager, AdTran More information at http://blogs.voxeo.com

Voxeo Speaks #005 – Building a Corporate Blog Portal using WordPress MU

Monday, January 25th, 2010

At O’Reilly’s OSCON 2009 in San Jose, Voxeo’s Dan York spoke about using WordPress MU (WPMU) to create a corporate blog portal. Dan discussed how he used WPMU to create blogs.voxeo.com and specifically the tools he used, the lessons he learned and suggestions he would offer to others. NOTE: The video is very dark and could not be fixed in post-production. It is admittedly more of an audio file with some slides visible. FYI, the slides are available for viewing directly at http://www.slideshare.net/voxeo/oscon-2009-building-a-corporate-blog-portal-using-wordpress-mu-wpmu

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Securing Cloud Telephony Dan York, CISSP, Director of Conversations ? Voxeo As voice and self-service applications move increasingly into the cloud and to IP communications, what do you need to be concerned about with regard to the security of hosted solutions? If you grow to trust the cloud, how can you be sure it will be there for you? What protections can you put in place? What backup plans can you establish? What questions should you ask potential hosted/cloud vendors? In this session, security professional Dan York will walk you through the basic risk areas of voice-over-IP security, explain how those relate to both hosted and hybrid configurations and leave you with a concrete list of questions to consider in considering hosted/cloud options. Video: TMC’s Erin Harrison interviews Voxeo’s Dan York at ITEXPO 2009

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Two weeks ago out at ITEXPO West 2009 in Los Angeles, Erin Harrison from TMCnet interviewed me (Dan York) about what Voxeo has been up to and where we are going. Amusingly, it didn’t really dawn on me why we were sitting in front of a green backdrop until I saw the end result and the fact that we now appear in front of a bunch of city buildings. :-)

In any event, those of you interested can now watch the video here:

You can also view the video at this link, although if you go there, you have to watch an ad before viewing the video.

Video interview of Voxeo’s Dan York at ITEXPO East in February 2009

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Want to learn more about what Voxeo is doing these days? Or about how our acquisitions of VoiceObjects and MicroMethod fit into our overall plans?

Back in early February, I (Dan York) was down at the Internet Telephony Expo (ITEXPO) East 2009 show in Miami and sat down with TMC’s Eric Linask to talk about what is new with Voxeo.

I recently noticed that TMC has added the ability to embed their videos, so while you can also view the video on TMC’s site, I thought I’d also share it here.

I should note that this video is now three months old, so some of the numbers I shared here are no longer correct (ex. we now have had over 35,000 developers build voice apps in our Evolution Developer Portal), but overall the information is still accurate. (Well, my title has since changed to “Director of Conversations”…)

If you are planning to be out at the ITEXPO West 2009 in September in Los Angeles, you’ll probably also find me there…

Videos from eComm 2009: Ge Wang about Ocarina and iPhone apps

Friday, March 27th, 2009

ecomm2009promo-1.jpgOver on the Emerging Communications Conference (eComm) blog, organizer Lee Dryburgh has started releasing videos of the eComm 2009 presentations. All the presentations were recorded and are currently going through post-production to be uploaded to the eComm site. Lee indicates that they’ll be released over on the eComm blog as they are post-produced over the weeks and months ahead.

The first one out is the fun presentation by Ge Wang, called New Expressive Social Mediums on the iPhone which talked about his work at Smule to produce iPhone applications like the virtual lighter and more importantly the Ocarina musical application. I enjoyed his presentation because it was, well, just so different from what you typically find at conferences in our space. Here it is for your viewing pleasure:

And okay, how many of you went to your iPhone and bought Ocarina? :-)

Keep an eye on the eComm blog to see more videos appearing soon…
