Slides from VoiceCon Orlando 2010 Sessions – Securing Communications and SIP Tutorial

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Last week at VoiceCon Orlando 2010, I was a panelist on two sessions and gave a 3-hour SIP tutorial. Two of those sessions involved slides and I’ve now uploaded those to our SlideShare account.

First up was the “Securing Communications” session where I provided this set of slides to help set up the discussion that followed:

The next day, I gave my 3-hour tutorial on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and used this set of slides:

My final session on Presence was discussion-only without slides.

Voxeo’s Dan York’s slides from VoiceCon: Developing Voice Apps Using Mashups and SOA

Monday, November 9th, 2009

At VoiceCon SF 2009 last week in San Francisco, I (Dan York) spoke about “Developing Voice Apps Using Mashups and SOA“. In the talk, I discussed what voice “mashups” are, gave a couple of examples, and then went on to show one of the Tropo.com examples found on the documentation page – the specific one I showed was the Yahoo!Weather example in python. I logged into my Tropo.com account, created a new application, indicated that I wanted to use a hosted file, copied/pasted text from the example, and then set up a phone number and IM address.

You can do all this, too, since Tropo.com accounts are free. :-)

Here are the slides I used in my voice mashups talk:

Voxeo CTO RJ Auburn at eComm Europe: The Rise of Real-Time Text and the Demise of Voice

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Over at eComm Europe in Amsterdam yesterday, Voxeo CTO RJ Auburn did his characteristic stirring of the pot with a talk called The Rise of Real-Time Text and the Demise of Voice. The Twittersphere seemed to be quite amused by the CTO of a “voice” company saying this – an oft-twittered phrase was:

Voxeo is talking about text, not voice! Kids don’t talk on the phone, they text or IM. So the future is text.

To people reading this blog or any of our other blogs, these statements shouldn’t come as any real surprise. Today the way companies interact with customers definitely includes voice – and for ten years now we’ve helped over 100,000 developers, over 45,000 companies and over half the Fortune 100 deliver exceptional customer service over voice.

But any look at communications trends today – including our own usage as individuals – will show that we’re increasingly moving to a world in which voice is only one of the many channels that customers use to interact with you – and it may not be the preferred channel. It’s not just the fact that “Kids don’t talk on the phone” – it’s also that we as consumers/individuals don’t want to wait on the phone while a call center agent takes forever to look something up on a slow computer system. We want to multi-task… we want to get other things done. But yet sometimes we also want to just get a person on the phone.

From a Voxeo perspective, we call this “Unified Self-Service™” – the idea of developing one application and allowing customers to interact with that application through whatever communication channel they choose: voice, SMS, IM, Twitter, mobile web … whatever.

We’re not just talking about this, of course… we’ve made it real today… with our Prophecy 10 platform, with our IMified platform, with our VoiceObjects product… you can sign up for a free account in our Evolution developer portal and write a VoiceXML app that interacts with users via voice (from the PSTN, SIP or Skype), via SMS or via IM. Today. Now. It’s that simple. Or go over to Tropo.com and write your multi-channel app in JavaScript, Ruby, python, PHP or Groovy. One application – many channels.

You’ll obviously see us writing and speaking more about this topic in the weeks and months ahead. But rather than listen to us – dive in and try it out!

And in the meantime, check out RJ’s slides – they are done in RJ’s typical excellent style (and yes, he presented the 94 slides in under 15 minutes):

Video: Dan York at ClueCon 2009: The Security Saga of SysAdmin Steve (248 slides in 15 mins…)

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Given my role within the VoIP Security Alliance (VOIPSA), I’ve spent a great amount of time over the last 5 years traveling to conferences speaking about the security of VoIP systems. A couple of years back, I was getting really sick of the “standard” type of presentation about VoIP security. So for O’Reilly’s ETel conference in 2007 I decided to do something completely different and tell a story that illustrated the issues around VoIP security. It was a lot of fun to do – although it took a great amount of work to put together.

This year Brian West asked me if I could give that presentation at ClueCon 2009 in August in Chicago. I did… and this time it was captured on video. Unfortunately it was a rather sad commentary on the continued state of affairs with regard to VoIP security that I didn’t need to change much. Most of the same issues of 2 years ago are still with us. I did change and tweak the presentation a bit… and actually did add a few slides.

On the slides, this is a presentation involving showing 248 slides in about 15 minutes. I can’t take credit for the style… it’s a kind of presentation method popularized by Prof. Larry Lessig – a good example is his “free culture” presentation. The Presentation Zen site also pointed to another example and also offered some commentary on the “Lessig Method”. I’ve found it a useful style… it does keep people’s attention, particularly because you’ll note that the slides sometimes have certain snide comments that do NOT appear in my actual speaking. At some point, I’d like to put together some more talks like this… particularly ones that tell a story in this way. It’s all really a matter of making the time… these are a lot harder to construct.

Anyway, here’s the video – the slides are embedded below for those who want to see the slide set. However, you really need the audio to make sense of the slides.

Slides for Dan York’s “Securing Cloud Telephony” SpeechTEK talk now available…

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

On Monday, August 24th, at SpeechTEK in New York, I (Dan York) gave a talk called “Securing Cloud Telephony” with the abstract:

As voice and self-service applications move increasingly into the cloud and to IP communications, what do you need to be concerned about with regard to the security of hosted solutions? If you grow to trust the cloud, how can you be sure it will be there for you? What protections can you put in place? What backup plans can you establish? What questions should you ask potential hosted/cloud vendors? In this session, security professional Dan York will walk you through the basic risk areas of voice-over-IP security, explain how those relate to both hosted and hybrid configurations and leave you with a concrete list of questions to consider in considering hosted/cloud options.

My slides are now available here:

http://www.slideshare.net/voxeo/speechtek-2009-securing-cloud-telephony-aug2009

Given that SpeechTEK records all the sessions and sells the resulting CD, I doubt that I will be able to publish a recording of the talk. Perhaps at a future time I’ll be able to give a similar talk at conference that allows open recording/distribution… or maybe I’ll just have to do a webinar some time on the topic. :-)

Voxeo’s CTO RJ Auburn to speak at JavaOne Conference in San Francisco next week

Friday, May 29th, 2009

If you will be attending the JavaOne Conference next week stop by The Moscone Center to hear RJ talk about how to build voice mashups with SIP Servlets or just to say hello, we know he is such a social butterfly!  This will be a 60 minute presentation titled “Taking a SIP of Java™ Technology: Building Voice Mashups with SIP Servlets” beginning at 9:45 am in room Esplanade 301.  The abstract of the presentation is:

The Java world has seen more then its fair share of telephony APIs come and go over the years. Things like JAIN SIP, JTAPI, Parlay, JAIN SLEE have been showing up on product road maps for several years now but SIP Servlets (now just released as a 1.1) are now finally seeing some industry wide adoption in application servers both closed and open source. Companies such as IBM     (WebSphere), Redhat (jboss), Sun (glassfish), Oracle, HP and Voxeo (sipmethod) have all recently added support for this standard.

SIP Servlets provide a simple API that mimics the widely deployed HTTP Servlet model allowing for java developers to easily adapt their existing code and framework for communication applications.

This session will provide a short introduction to sip servlets, why developers should pay attention and show people how they can    quickly create a converged application using the technology.

We will also show how you can quickly plug into simple web APIs using SOAP and REST to create quick web mash-ups.

Concluding the session will be information for the attendees to find out more about the technologies discussed and info on what they can do to download and build applications themselves.

This will be a great presentation you won’t want to miss.  You can register here or drop a note to coordinate a meeting outside of the conference.

We’re now using SlideShare to display our presentations

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

slidesharebeta.jpgI’ve long been a fan of SlideShare.net as a tool for sharing presentations and today I’m pleased to announce that we’re now starting to upload public presentations to:

http://www.slideshare.net/voxeo

SlideShare offers capabilities for presentations similar to what YouTube offers for videos: reviews, comments, tags, “related” presentations and much more. They also provide the very nice ability to embed a presentation directly into a web site. Here is an example with a presentation RJ gave last month at Asterisk World 2008 / VON 2008 in San Jose:

What’s also cool is that if we had the audio for a presentation like this, we can sync the audio to the slides so that you can listen and see the slides move with the audio. Here’s an example I did for a VoIP security talk: “The Black Bag Security Review.” You can also download the PDF file for each set of slides if you go to the page on the SlideShare site for the specific presentation (allowing download is an option at SlideShare, but one we’ve enabled for our presentations so far).

We’ve uploaded three current presentations from RJ to our SlideShare area right now and in the months ahead we’ll upload more presentations as we speak at other conferences or just have presentations we’d like to share. (We’ll also add audio when we can.)

What do you think? Do you find seeing presentations in this format useful? Comments about our presentations – or about our use of SlideShare – are definitely welcome.

FYI – Dan York to speak at Ingate SIP Trunking Seminars next week in Miami

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

button_Miami08.gifIf any of you will be in Miami next week for Internet Telephony Expo, I will be speaking at Ingate’s SIP Trunking Seminar Series held in conjunction with IT Expo. It probably comes as no surprise, if you know my background, that I’ll be speaking in the session from 8:30-9:45am on Thursday, January 24th, titled “Seminar/myth 1: VoIP is not secure“.

These SIP Trunking Seminars have always been very well attended and have had a great amount of information included. They are free, but if you’d like to be sure to have a spot you can pre-register.

If any of you are attending either IT Expo or the SIP Trunking Seminar Series, please do drop a note as I’m always interested in meeting readers.
